A Care Order is a legal directive issued by a family court, placing a child under the care of a local authority. It is typically issued when a court determines that a child is at risk of significant harm due to neglect, abuse, or other concerns within their home environment. Under a Care Order, the local authority (often referred to as “social services") shares parental responsibility for the child with the child's parents or guardians.

The key aspects of a Care Order include:

1. Parental Responsibility: While parents or guardians maintain some rights, the local authority gains the authority to make decisions regarding the child’s welfare, including where they live, their education, and medical treatment.

2. Duration: A Care Order usually remains in effect until the child turns 18, unless it is discharged earlier by the court.

3. Placement: The child may be placed in foster care, a children’s home, or with a family member, depending on what the court and local authority deem to be in the child's best interests.

• Interim Care Order: A temporary order granted while the court is still assessing the child’s situation. It gives the local authority temporary responsibility while a full investigation is conducted.
• Full Care Order: A long-term order issued after the court has made a final decision, placing the child under the care of the local authority until they turn 18.
