Speeding is dangerous and in some cases, fatal, yet this type of offence is among the most common road traffic offences.
Speed Limits
Knowing the speed limits for the type of road you are on is vital. Whilst going too far can cause an accident, driving much too slowly for the road you are on is also dangerous. Different types of vehicle have different speed limits, but we’re focusing on cars;
Built-up areas – 30mph
Single carriageways – 60mph
Dual carriageways – 70mph
Motorways – 70mph
You must also be aware that local councils can enforce their own speed limits – such as 20mph next to a school.
Speeding Tickets
If you have been caught speeding, you will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) and a Section 172 notice through the post within 14 days. You must send back the Section 172 notice, informing the police who was driving the car.
Penalty Points
Drivers will be disqualified if they build up more than 12 points within a three years period. Drivers that are still within two years of passing their test will be disqualified for building up 6 points within this period.
The minimum penalty for speeding is £100 and three points added to your driving licence.
Speed Awareness Course
In some cases, you may be given the option of attending a speed awareness course and not having points added to your licence. This option will only be given to you if the police decide that it’s an appropriate course of action and you have not attended a speed awareness course in the last three years.
