Totting up refers to an accumulation of penalty points on your driving licence, which leads to a driving disqualification. Disqualification will occur if an individual accumulates 12 penalty points within a three year period.
How Long Do Points Stay on my Licence?
The time in which penalty points will stay on your record will be either 4 or 11 years, depending on the nature of the offence. The start date of these points may either be from the day you are convicted or the day of the offence. It should be noted that points are only “valid” or “active” for the first three years of a four-year endorsement and for the first ten years of an eleven-year endorsement.
If another offence is committed whilst you have points on your licence, a court can take these into consideration when considering your case.
Does my Insurer know I Have Penalty Points?
If you have been given penalty points that will last for four years on your driving record, your insurer may be able to find out at any time during this four-year period. If you have been given points that will last eleven years, your insurer may be able to find out at any point during the first five years, or 30 months if you are under the age of 18.
New Drivers
New drivers have a stricter law to abide by when it comes to totalling up points and will have their licence taken away if they reach a total of six points within the first two years of driving.
